15 Million American Households Have Damaged a Device During the Holidays

SquareTrade®, the #1-rated protection plan trusted by millions of happy customers, today released the results of a consumer survey about holiday device damage.

American households are particularly accident-prone with their devices during the holiday season. According to SquareTrade’s Holiday Survey1:

1 in 8 households in America have damaged a laptop, phone, camera or tablet during the holidays,
35% of devices damaged during the holidays were mobile phones,
Nearly twice as many iPhones were reported damaged during the holidays as Samsung smartphones, and
51% of damages during the holiday season is attributed to holiday activities
traveling (22%)
shopping (12%)
cooking (10%)
decorating (7%)

“It’s tough to be a device during the holidays – we were surprised to find that more than half of accidents were attributed to activities like traveling, holiday shopping, cooking and decorating,” said Ty Shay, SquareTrade’s CMO. “Retailers are expecting sales of over $640 billion2 during this year’s holiday shopping season, and no doubt much of that will go towards gifting high-tech devices like smartphones, tablets and game consoles – fragile and high priced items that apparently need extra safeguarding during the holidays.”

  1. If you buy on ebay you have no receit and square trade will not honor your purchased warranty. Twice we were told to basically f#@$ off when we did file. Needs a name change to screw trade.

    • Hey there,

We’re so sorry to hear about this. We try to be as flexible as possible to make sure our customers are covered but it sounds like we dropped the ball. If you could email me at tiffanyhelps(at)squaretrade.com, I’d love to see if there’s anything I could do to help turn this experience around!

  2. I was going to purchase your ins for the Nexus I am buying until I saw that you charge $8.77 shipping on top of the $42 for ins for two years. What a purse snatching outfit. I am getting the pad shipped for free and you charge me 8 bucks for mailing paper. And your warranty is not after the 1 year mfg warranty so I am only getting one year protection!!!!! I paid for my pad with American Express, they give an extra years warranty for free. I DON’T SUPPORT PURSE SNATCHING OUTFITS.

    • Hey Ed,

We’re so sorry to hear that you’re unhappy with us. We typically wouldn’t charge for shipping for our protection plan but there are certain states where we’re required to charge sales tax. If you could email me at tiffanyhelps(at)squaretrade.com, I’d love to see if there’s anything I could do to help!

      Regards,
      Tiffany U.,
